Love Letter from Harry Knox to Lucy Knox
White Marsh, Pennsylvania
November 5, 1777
Although the letter dates a month prior to the Valley Forge Encampment and was sent from the camp at White Marsh, Knox's longing for his wife was a sentiment shared by many of the men at the camp. Knox notes that "nothing but the flattering hope of being assisting in freeing my Country from a lot of proud usurpers and from threatened slavery, war then death should have tempted me to resign...that happiness which I enjoyd [sic] in the society of my Lucy."
